Percy the Pebble is a picture book for children aged 3 to 8 which is aimed at educating through the story. As it begins, Percy, a “chip off the old family block”, fails to listen to his mother and during a storm is swept out to sea.
Percy the
Pebble, Mama, Papa—all three, live snug in a cliff, that looks over the
sea. Papa says,
“He’s a chip off the old family block, with a walnut-sized brain of tough
granite rock.”
Further into the story…
Back and forth he is tossed, with six shrimps and a crab, ribbons of seaweed, an old boot, and a bag….
Percy finally lands miles away on a pebbly beach. Here a young lady strolls with a toddler who picks up Percy and takes him home to the garden of the cottage where they live. Percy misses his family and reflects on his mistake in not listening to them. In the garden he meets a toad, a slug, robins, worms and more. One day the toddler brings home more pebbles that turn out to be his family. He is reunited and the story ends happily with him having learned his lesson about listening to what he is told.
The illustrations are bright and colourful and help carry the educational story of ocean currents and the many creatures found on and beside the oceans. Children will learn inductively while they enjoy and see the many fun things that Percy meets on his adventure.
The story is the first in a series inspired by my brother and long-time schoolteacher, Paul Wokes. Paul created the story idea, I added the poetry, and we hired Katy Dynes to illustrate. Katy has illustrated numerous children’s books, wall friezes and other material. She is a sought after artist.
At least three other books are planned in this series, and possibly more. Each has an educational aspect while being lots of fun to read and with lovely family-friendly colourful pictures to enjoy.
When this first book is available on Amazon, I will add a link to this page.
